Local Biz Spotlight: The Gourmet Shop
A Taste of France in the Heart of Columbia

This week, we’re highlighting a local business that has become a go-to for many University of South Carolina students: The Gourmet Shop.
Nestled in the heart of Five Points at 724 Saluda Avenue, this café and market has been a Columbia favorite since 1979. With its welcoming ambiance and European charm, it’s no surprise this spot has built a loyal following over the years.
Positives:
The Gourmet Shop is one of those places that feels like a little slice of France tucked away in Columbia. Whether you’re grabbing brunch with friends or enjoying a slow lunch with family, the food never disappoints. Favorites like their famous chicken salad, pimento cheese, and toasted paninis keep customers coming back week after week. The atmosphere is warm, airy, and truly one-of-a-kind—you won’t find another spot quite like it around here.
Beyond the café, the shop itself is a foodie’s dream. You can browse through shelves filled with imported wines, gourmet candy, cheeses, coffee beans, and kitchen essentials. They even carry top-of-the-line brands like Shun, Global, Jura, and Illy. It’s easy to lose track of time while wandering through the market, and honestly, that’s part of the charm. Whether you're looking for a unique gift or just love treating yourself, there's always something new to discover.
Negatives:
If there’s one thing to note, it’s that The Gourmet Shop gets busy—especially on weekends. Long wait times are common, but honestly, that’s just proof of how beloved this place is. The good news? You can spend your time browsing the shop while you wait. It makes the experience feel more like an adventure than an inconvenience.
Would I recommend:
Absolutely. I practically come here almost every weekend with my roommates, and when my mom is in town, this is the first place she asks to go. It’s just one of those places that makes you feel at home while also treating you to something a little special. Next to Cantina 76, this is hands down one of the most recommended brunch spots for USC families—and for good reason. Everyone absolutely loves it. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a regular, The Gourmet Shop delivers every single time.
