Southern Comfort, Unexpected Flavor—A Columbia Classic Reimagined

This week, we're shining a light on a Columbia classic that's been serving up Southern charm and cuisine for decades—Mr. Friendly's New Southern Café.
Nestled in the heart of Five Points at 2001 Greene Street, this beloved spot has become a go-to for both locals and visitors seeking a taste of innovative Southern fare in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Positives:
Let’s start with the food—it’s truly to die for. Mr. Friendly’s takes Southern staples and gives them a fresh, flavorful upgrade that keeps people coming back. They regularly switch up the specials, which makes every visit feel like a new experience (pro tip: always ask about the fish of the day!). The peach mustard BBQ glazed salmon, fried green tomatoes, and nightly desserts are standouts, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, perfect for anything from a casual lunch to a celebratory dinner. The staff is always super friendly and knowledgeable, especially when it comes to pairing from their extensive wine list or recommending something new to try. It’s also in a great walkable area of Five Points, making it a great addition to a night out.
Negatives:
Because it’s such a gem, it fills up fast—especially on weekends—so I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The indoor space is cozy, which adds to the charm but can feel a bit tight when it’s packed. And like most spots in Five Points, parking can take a minute, so give yourself a little extra time to find a spot.
Would I recommend:
Absolutely—this is my mom’s favorite restaurant, and we both think it’s one of the most underrated spots in Columbia. We have at least one dinner there every time she visits, and I even had my post-graduation dinner there. The food, the service, the vibe—it all just hits the spot.
If you’re looking for a place that feels special without being overly fancy, Mr. Friendly’s is it. Great for family dinners, date nights, or a treat-yourself solo meal. Just be warned: one visit might turn into a tradition.
