Local Biz Spotlight: The West Columbia Riverwalk
Columbia's Hidden Gem for Nature, Peace, and Free Fun

This week, we’re highlighting the best place to go for a walk in Columbia!
The Riverwalk is an ideal spot for students, families, or anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a breath of fresh air. Just outside the city, you’ll find a beautiful river walk with scenic views of bridges, an amphitheater, and stunning vistas of the Congaree River.
Positives:
Looking for the perfect escape from campus life? Columbia's River Walk is literally a breath of fresh air, and honestly, it's become my favorite spot to decompress between classes. This gorgeous stretch along the Congaree River runs for over two miles and is completely free to the public – perfect for those of us living that budget-conscious student life!
The path is lined with stunning homes that'll have you dreaming big about your future, plus there are plenty of benches where you can park yourself for an outdoor study session or peaceful lunch break. I love grabbing some takeout and watching the river flow by – it's way better than fighting for a table at the crowded campus coffee shop. There's something about being near the water that just makes all those looming deadlines feel a little less intense.
Whether you're meeting up with friends for a walk, getting some exercise, or just need to clear your head after a rough exam, the River Walk hits different. It's become my go-to spot for everything from solo walks to group hangouts, and it's perfect for when family visits for the weekend. Trust me, there's nothing better than escaping the concrete jungle of campus for a bit and pretending you're somewhere far from your growing pile of assignments. The best part? It's right here in our backyard!
Negatives:
While the River Walk is an incredible spot that I absolutely recommend, it's worth mentioning that like any outdoor area, it's smartest to enjoy it with a friend and stick to daylight hours if possible. The trail is beautiful and well-maintained, but it's always good practice to be aware of your surroundings when you're relaxing or exercising outdoors – just basic common sense that applies anywhere you go!
Would I recommend:
Absolutely! The River Walk has become one of my favorite spots in Columbia, and I can't recommend it enough. The peaceful atmosphere makes it the perfect escape when you need to reset, and it's such a natural way to get some exercise while hanging out with friends. Plus, it costs nothing – which is always a win for college students!
I love seeing the mix of people who enjoy the trail, from students taking study breaks to families out for weekend walks. It really shows how versatile this space is. Whether you're looking for a new running route, a scenic spot to catch up with friends, or just need a quiet place to clear your head, the River Walk delivers. It's honestly one of Columbia's best features, and once you visit, you'll understand why so many people keep coming back.
