Local Biz Spotlight: McCutchen House!

USC's Student-Run Restaurant on the Horseshoe

This week, we're highlighting a student-run restaurant that has become a favorite among students, locals, USC staff, and visitors: The McCutchen House

Built in 1813 as the second faculty residence on the South Carolina College campus, this historic building has withstood the Civil War and the evolving landscape of the university. Today, it operates under the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, serving as a venue for dining, culinary and wine classes, and special events

Positives:

Managed by USC hospitality students, The McCutchen House offers a unique dining experience with a menu that changes twice each semester under the guidance of a head chef. Diners are treated to complimentary tomato pies and the renowned chocolate walnut pies. The restaurant provides both takeout and fine dining options, catering to various preferences. Operating hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., during the university's regular fall and spring semesters. The food is made all in-house with a head chef and students learning from them. The food is worth a try, and it's great to see students thriving in their environment.

The McCutchen House is more than just a restaurant; it's a hands-on classroom where hospitality management students gain valuable experience in running a full-service establishment. This unique setting allows diners to enjoy delicious meals while supporting the education of future hospitality professionals. The menu features a variety of dishes, including a daily soup selection, salads, entrées like grilled chicken kebobs and roast round of beef, and the signature chocolate walnut pie. The restaurant also offers private dining rooms for groups of up to 20 guests, making it an excellent choice for special occasions or business meetings. Reservations are recommended to ensure a memorable dining experience.

Negatives:

One thing I will say is that it's important to note that The McCutchen House is only open on weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., which may not accommodate everyone's schedule. So make sure to plan ahead and try out the amazing food The McCutchen House has to offer.

Would I recommend:

As a hospitality student who had the privilege of working at The McCutchen House, I can confidently say it's a must-visit spot on campus. The food is exceptional, and the experience offers a unique glimpse into the practical side of hospitality management. Whether you're between classes on the Horseshoe or visiting campus, it's a convenient and delightful option. Beyond being a restaurant, it's a hands-on classroom where students like me gain invaluable experience in running a full-service establishment.
