Textbook Tips for Saving Time and Money
Hey parents! As the new semester kicks off, remind your students to keep textbooks in mind. They can order them online or grab them in-store at the USC Bookstore, where they’ll find pretty much everything they need. But here’s the catch: it’s not always the most budget-friendly option. So, before they hit “order,” it’s worth knowing there are often cheaper alternatives.
My advice as a senior? Wait until after syllabus week to buy. Sometimes you’ll find out you don’t need the book at all, or your student might even switch classes (trust me, it happens). If they do need the book, check out other websites or Facebook groups where students are selling their used copies. It’s a much better deal than buying brand new from the bookstore.
In short: the bookstore has everything, but it’s not always the cheapest option. Hold off, save some cash, and treat yourselves to something fun—like coffee (or a nice dinner out).

Group X Free Week: Your Fitness Kickoff at Campus Recreation!
As a senior here at USC, I know how important it is for your student to stay active and healthy. That's why I wanted to let you know about Group X Free Week, running from January 11–25. During this time, your student can try out as many classes as they like without any cost. With over 70 classes each week, there's something for everyone—from yoga and Zumba to strength training and cycling. They can sign up on DSE to reserve their spot.
If they find a class they love, they can purchase the Group Fitness pass, which gives them unlimited access to all classes through the end of the semester. I personally love the spin classes, and go at least twice a week! It's a great way to explore different workouts and find what fits their style. Encourage them to take advantage of this free week to jumpstart their fitness journey!

Gamecock Basketball Road Trip: SEC Matchups You Won't Want to Miss!
Get ready for some action-packed basketball as the Gamecocks are hitting the road for back-to-back games. First up, the men’s team will be taking on Vanderbilt in Nashville on Wednesday, January 15, at 6:00 PM. It’s an away game, but don’t worry — if your student’s anything like me, they’ll find a way to catch the game, even if it’s just the highlights between classes.
Then, the women’s team will head to Alabama on Thursday, January 16, at 7:00 PM. Whether your student is a die-hard fan or just there for the snacks and school spirit, these SEC matchups are bound to be intense. The good news? It’s a great excuse to hang out with friends, grab some food, and cheer on the Gamecocks from the comfort of their favorite spots. I’ll be heading down to Five Points to Jack Brown’s, Village Idiot, or The Salty Nut for a nice beverage and some great food — those are the spots to be! Trust me, the atmosphere will be electric. Let’s go, Cocks!
