Student Senate Updates, New Restaurant Alert, SEC Men’s Basketball

Hi Everyone -  here's what we got this week at the University of South Carolina:

On the docket:

  • Big Updates from the Student Senate!

  • New Resturant Alert: Tupelo Honey

  • Gamecock Men’s Basketball vs. Texas A&M – January 31st

Big Updates from the Student Senate!

USC’s 116th Student Senate is wasting no time this semester, passing 13 pieces of legislation during their first spring meeting. Among the highlights, they’re tackling some real student concerns. First up: cleaning standards at Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center. We’ve all been there—gym equipment that’s way past due for a wipe-down. There’s now a push to ensure towels are stocked and equipment is properly cleaned between classes. No more skipping machines just because they look... questionable.

On a more serious note, parking garages are getting attention too. Senator Kailey Goodrich proposed adding cameras and police call buttons to make these spaces safer, especially at night. With over 2 million crimes reported annually in parking lots nationwide, this change is a big step toward peace of mind for students. (Because honestly, no one wants their parking spot to feel like the opening scene of a thriller movie. ) The Senate also passed legislation for foot door-openers in bathrooms, active shooter instruction posters, and updates to outdated lounge furniture. They’re making moves!

New Resturant Alert: Tupelo Honey

If you're planning a visit to Columbia to see your favorite Gamecock (yes, even if they forgot to call you back last week), I’ve got the perfect spot for your family outing: Tupelo Honey Cafe is making its debut in the BullStreet District!

Known for its trendy Southern charm and dishes that feel like a warm hug from your grandma, this restaurant is the place to share some quality time—and maybe a sweet potato pancake or two—with your student. It's located in the new Bennet at BullStreet apartment development, right near Segra Park (bonus points if you catch a baseball game afterward!). Parents, this is the kind of place where memories are made (and appetites are happily demolished). Treat your kid to brunch, let them order whatever they want (you know, within reason), and soak up that quality time you’ve been missing. And when you’re not in town? It’s the perfect spot for your student to catch up with friends over some Southern comfort food—because sometimes they need a little love in biscuit form. This will surely be a go-to spot for family visits and Sunday brunch with friends!

Gamecock Men’s Basketball vs. Texas A&M-February 1st

If you're looking for a reason to remind your Gamecock to call you (or at least text back with more than a thumbs-up emoji), this is it! The SEC Men’s Basketball Game is happening on Saturday, February 1st, at the Colonial Life Arena, and our boys will be taking on Texas A&M in what promises to be an exciting showdown. Tip-off is at 8:30 PM, so be sure to nudge your student to request their ticket—because we all know they could use a little reminder every now and then.

And if you’re in town for the game, I’ve got you covered for pre-game or post-game plans. Head down to Salty Nut Cafe for some burgers and brews or check out Village Idiot Pizza for a slice and a pint. Trust me, these are the kinds of spots that make Columbia feel like home. Just make sure your student knows to save you a seat—you’re buying, after all!

Let’s cheer on the Gamecocks together, whether you’re in the stands or just making sure your kid’s actually at the game. Go Cocks!
