Farewell, McBryde: USC’s Big Dorm Upgrade is Coming!

Big changes are coming to campus, Gamecock Nation! USC is officially saying goodbye to McBryde Hall, the 70-year-old dorm tucked behind Thomas Cooper Library. If those walls could talk, they’d probably have some wild stories—so maybe it’s for the best. In its place, a brand-new residence hall will rise, doubling the capacity for students and expanding the Honors College. It’s a major upgrade, but don’t worry—current residents will be relocated, so no one is getting left out in the cold (or stuck with a last-minute off-campus scramble).

For those feeling nostalgic about McBryde’s legacy (or just want to see if their old room gets a shoutout), a historical exhibit is in the works at Thomas Cooper Library for Fall 2025. Think of it as a little tribute to all the late-night study sessions, roommate bonding moments, and, let’s be honest, probably some questionable dorm cooking experiments. Out with the old, in with the new—USC is leveling up, and we’re here for it!

Tough Loss, Unshaken Legacy: Coach Staley’s Dynasty Is Just Getting Started

Gamecock Nation, we’re keeping the GOAT right where she belongs! The University of South Carolina locked in Coach Dawn Staley with a well-deserved contract extension through the 2029-30 season, making her the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball history. And honestly, she’s worth every penny. With three national championships, six Final Fours, and seven 30+ win seasons under her belt, she’s built a dynasty right here in Columbia.

Yes, the recent tough loss against UConn stung—but don’t worry. One game doesn’t define this powerhouse program. If anything, it’s fuel for what’s next. Coach Staley and the team will be back stronger, hungrier, and more determined than ever.

Planning Ahead for Move-Out: Tips for USC Parents

Unfortunately, it’s a good time to start thinking about the end of the year (I know, it sneaks up on you!). For seniors like me, that means preparing for the big move-out. One tip I can’t stress enough is to get ahead of the game with storage units. If you’re from out of state, like me (shoutout to Boston!), a climate-controlled unit is a must. I’ve learned the hard way that hot and humid summers don’t do your stuff any favors!

Now is the perfect time to research storage options, especially since many places offer student discounts. You’ll want to lock in your spot before the rush hits in May when everyone’s scrambling. I would recommend starting sorting clothes now—there’s nothing worse than trying to figure out what to keep, donate, or sell in a frantic panic right before finals.

If anyone is looking for movers or storage recommendations, Dean’s List has reviews from other students who’ve been through it all because nothing says "senior year" like already planning for next year!

Gamecocks Triumph in the 2024 Carolina-Clemson Game

The Gamecocks secured a thrilling victory over the Clemson Tigers in the 121st meeting of the historic rivalry, known as the Battle of the Palmetto State. Played on Saturday, November 30th, at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina, the game showcased the determination and grit of the South Carolina football team. From the opening kick to the final whistle, the Gamecocks delivered an electrifying performance, with standout plays on both offense and defense. This win not only cements their legacy in the rivalry but also brings immense pride to Gamecock fans across the state and beyond.

For students, alumni, and parents, this victory is more than just a game; it’s a testament to the heart and spirit of the University of South Carolina. The Palmetto State’s fiercest rivalry is a beloved tradition, and this year’s outcome will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come. As the Gamecocks celebrate this significant win, students are heading into the final weeks of the semester with a renewed sense of pride and excitement. Go Gamecocks!

Final Exams: Supporting Your Student During a Busy Time

As the semester draws to a close, your student is preparing for final examinations, which take place from December 9–16. This period can be both exciting and overwhelming as students work hard to finish strong in their courses. The university has published the official exam schedule, ensuring students know when and where their exams will be held. Please encourage your student to review their schedule carefully and plan their study time effectively to stay on top of their responsibilities. I’ve noticed that the campus library is always packed during finals week, so it’s a great idea for your students to book library time early or consider exploring off-campus coffee shops for a quieter study environment.

This is also an excellent time to remind your student to prioritize their well-being. With long hours of studying, it’s important to stay hydrated, eat nutritious meals, and get plenty of sleep. A supportive message or even a care package with their favorite snacks or study supplies can make a big difference. Final exams can be stressful, but with preparation and encouragement, your student will be ready to tackle this challenge and end the semester on a high note.
